How to Get in the Zen Zone, Arizona-Style
Though the jewelry designer Luz Ortiz planned an Arizona adventure to Tucson, Scottsdale, and Phoenix to stretch her legs in the desert, collect cool gems, and eat all the Southwestern food, she ended up coming home to Brooklyn with some peace of mind that lasted way longer than the trip did. If that sounds like something you’re seeking, keep on reading for her mind-clearing favorites.
“This hotel was such a hit! It’s in Tucson, up in the mountains in the middle of the desert, and it’s surrounded by the valley. The views are gorgeous and perhaps feature one of the best sunsets I’ve ever seen. The hotel itself used to be a ranch, but they converted it around the thirties. It’s very intimate and quiet, and the food is great. It’s definitely a little gem.”
“This vintage store is in Tucson, and I really like the curated selection of pieces. It has just the right amount of clothes—so it’s not crowded or overwhelming—and all the pieces are really unique. I was able to score two gorgeous dresses and a great black purse.”
“If you’re into crystals and gems, Arizona has a bunch of really great gem stores. We visited Tucson Mineral & Gem World, and it has a bit of everything, from minerals to fossils to a variety of stones, so it was really fun to explore.”
“I was super eager to visit the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation location Taliesin West in Scottsdale—it was the highlight of the trip. You have to reserve a tour before going to the property, but it was so amazing. He is one of my favorite architects, and you get to see see where he slept, entertained, and worked—I’d highly recommend!”
“I was only in Phoenix for a day, but we found this great Mexican restaurant when we were there. It isn’t your typical Mexican menu because everything had a bit of a twist, like vegan chiles en nogada, and it was all really good. The restaurant itself is small and casual but still very chic.”
“This fancier restaurant was attached to the hotel that we stayed at in Tucson, and it was so, so good. The views are also so incredible. There’s another restaurant in the hotel, but I just kept going to this one, especially for the brunch.”
