A Foolproof Guide to Having a Fantastic Time in Barcelona

Key to the City BY courtney conway 07/19/2018

Somehow—while running her own shop in Montclair, New Jersey, crafting sparkling gemstone jewelry for her namesake line, and parenting two tween boys—Katie Diamond makes time for some serious travel, squeezing trips to Morocco, Portugal, and Barcelona into her packed schedule. That last locale is still on her mind, almost a year later, and she’s here to sell you on why you should head there and make lots of memories of your own.

Stay

MIDTOWN APARTMENTS

“We brought our two sons with us—they were 10 and 12 when we went—so we decided to stay at this place called the Midtown Apartments in the Eixample neighborhood. It is super cool, has lots of space, and is central enough you can walk almost everywhere.”

SOHO HOUSE BARCELONA

“If you are going with no kids, then the Soho House is great—it has got a great feel and is fun to hang out at. But it’s by the marina, so it’s not as central if you want to do a lot of sightseeing.”

Eat

MERCAT DE LA BOQUERIA

“This is a big market with lots of stalls, and there’s one that has really amazing fresh juices!”

ELSA Y FRED

“Our kids are such good sports when it comes to travel, but Barcelona especially is great for bringing kids. We were able to stay out late and keep seeing things since all the restaurants are open until like midnight. On that note, I would recommend this place for dinner—it’s busy and fun.”

CIUDAD CONDAL

“Dinner at tapas spots like this is a great idea. We’d go and sit at the bar, and our boys loved it! There’s a lot of places to choose from, but we really liked this one in particular.”

CARAVELLE

“This place was good for brunch! It’s not traditional Spanish food, but it has really great eggs and things.”

Do Things

SAGRADA FAMILIA

“This Gaudí temple is definitely something you cannot miss! But you have to get tickets ahead of time. It gets unbelievably crowded and sells out super quick.”

BARRI GOTIC NEIGHBORHOOD

“One of my favorite things to do was walking around the historic Barri Gotic neighborhood after dinner. We even happened upon an incredible opera troupe performing in the street—it was seriously beautiful, and we just got lucky!”

CAMP NOU

“This is the Barcelona team’s soccer stadium. The kids loved this place—it’s super fun if you are into sports.”
