6 Tricks for Landing the Most Fun Vintage Scores

Stuff We Love 08/08/2018

Shelly Harper’s line of whimsical jewelry, Harp, is an extension of her colorful personal style. “I wear almost entirely vintage clothing. I’m very much inspired by the seventies, eighties, and nineties,” she explains. Her other major influence? Street style, and not the blogger kind. “The most interesting inspiration I have are the people I see in Oakland every day. I think the most interesting designs come from folks who don’t have a lot of resources, and they still look fly,” Shelly adds. Here’s a few of her tips of looking stop-and-stare worthy without spending a million bucks.

LOOK EVERYWHERE

“Working with what you have is so cool, so a lot of my inspiration comes from young kids because I see them wear things in new and interesting ways. And on the flip side, I really like Iris Apfel. She’s maximalist to the nth degree, and I just think she’s brilliant.”

BE TACTICAL ABOUT TEXTILES

“Getting to know your fabrics is really important, especially if you’re going vintage-hunting. When you’re looking for denim, you should know what a good vintage denim looks and feels like so you can quickly scan the racks and tell by touch or quick glance what’s soft and well-made.”

IGNORE SIZING

“Don’t only shop according to size. Even if you’re a smaller person, check out the plus-size racks as there might be a gem that looks great draped on you. Or vice versa: You could wear something smaller unbuttoned, and it could look fantastic!”

OVERLOAD YOUR OPTIONS

“Never make a purchasing decision when you’re picking up the piece. If you think you might be into something, throw it on the maybe pile, and don’t worry how big your maybe pile is. Try it all on! I’d say even go ahead and grab something that might be a little hideous because you might fall for it if you pair it with something classic like a good pair of jeans.”

PLAY WITH PROPORTION

“With accessories, I think balance is really important. I’m usually about a big, bold earring and no necklace, or I like a bolder layered necklace situation alone. I have these amazing chain belts, like an inch thick, meant to be wrapped around your wrist. I thrifted one a while ago and could never really make it work, but I just found an identical one and have been wearing them both stacked on one wrist. There’s something about going a little bit over what you think is too much that’s great; it gives you confidence that comes from wearing something a little weird. And you can always pair some really funky jewelry with just a simple tee. That’s the best.”

DISREGARD GENDER NORMS

“I think the gender gap between clothing is kind of old-fashioned. I would encourage a lot of women to wear men’s clothing and for men to shop the ladies’ section. For women, I think something made for men that’s not fitting super close to your body can end up looking really sexy. And this goes for jewelry, too—I’d encourage guys to throw on a pair of cool earrings. Why not?”
