How to Feel at Home Wherever You Go

Get Outta Town BY katie nave freeman 09/11/2018

For Miki Nora Christopherson, home isn’t a place—it’s a feeling. The designer honed her sculptural jewelry skills bouncing from Japan to Michigan to NYC and, now, to Florence. “Each time I’ve moved, I’ve started from zero. I didn’t take friends and always went by myself. This allowed me to meet so many kinds of people,” shares Miki. “Being alone and observing really took me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to open up.” While this sounds insanely romantic, it can also be totally intimidating. Below, Miki lets us in on what it takes to relocate and build a new community.

NEST BEFORE YOU REST

“Nesting is everything. I like to add a lot of color to my home because it feels warm. Fabrics and blankets can really make any place feel like home. Plants and kitchen supplies also help. I know I’m home when I can properly cook a meal and a know where everything I need is.”

JUST SAY YES

“It takes a while to build meaningful friendships, but it’s important not to be afraid to go out with new groups of people that you’ve just met. Listen and get to know them. They can be totally different than you, but in the end, it’s their personal quirks that you end up falling in love with.”

EMBRACE THE ADVENTURE

“Part of the beauty of being in a foreign country is not knowing the language. It feels like a vacation. A language often sounds so poetic when you don’t understand everything that is being said. I love to sit around with a group of people who are speaking a different language. It’s so fun to observe their movements and expressions…the way they laugh.”

DON’T GO IT TOTALLY ALONE

“It’s essential to keep in touch with family and friends to ward off loneliness. Social media is, of course, great. For more intimate and meaningful exchanges, I rely on looong emails and calls! For daily contact, WhatsApp is my go-to.”

PRACTICE PATIENCE

“Things will fall into place. For me, it takes a minimum of three months before I feel like I’ve got the hang of a place—and at least a year before it feels like home.”
