How to Found the Best Book Club Ever

Stuff We Love 09/19/2018

Katie Glenn’s book club began like so many others, recalls the jewelry designer behind the line Marionwild: “One night, fresh out of college, my closest girlfriends and I drank too much wine and started talking about our shared goal of wanting to read more.” But unlike so many clubs that have come—and gone—before, Katie and her crew of 10 literary ladies have kept this one up for over eight years. Here’s how they keep the spark alive.

DON’T LET A BAD BOOK GET YOU DOWN

“We ended up all hating the first book we read! I couldn’t even finish it. I’m so happy we kept going after that first one, though, because it’s really opened all of our minds to new ideas and stories. The best part is that it encourages us to read books that we would never have picked up. I personally have found some of my favorites from picks that didn’t seem that exciting upfront. Three of the best examples of that are Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, and Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi.”

FIND YOUR SYSTEM

“We have an ongoing list on who will pick the next book. We’ve worked out a schedule where the person picking the book will give us three to four options with links to GoodReads descriptions. Then we take a vote!”

STOP STRESSING

“Our book club does talk about the book, but we don’t come prepared with questions or topics to discuss. Some books are easy and fun reads, so they don’t get the biggest conversations. And then some books we dissect and really engage each other about.”

HONE YOUR HOSTING SKILLS

“We often match drinks to the book or the season. We once read a book named Moloka’i, about Hawaii, and made fruity slushy cocktails. We have an ongoing list on who brings the cheese plate, chips, appetizers, sides, salad, and main dishes. It’s actually pretty structured, which makes planning easy. And we’ve all become such wonderful cooks and bartenders! One of my favorite snacks that I’ve prepared is roasted grapes with ricotta cheese and baked bread. It sounds weird, but it’s so satisfying!”

BRANCH OUT

“This has become so much more than just a book club to me. Yes, we read and get together to discuss the text, but these women have been with me for so many years. We travel together; we’ve seen each other get married and go through break-ups. It’s amazing to have a group of supportive people that also loves to read along with you. If you’ve always wanted to join a book club but weren’t sure how, I’d say just try to start one yourself. You’d be surprised to see how many people are into the idea and would love to be part of a community like that. Also, ask your co-workers or acquaintances. It’s such a perfect way to make new friends!”
