How a Tulum Trip Put Pep in This Shoe Designer's Step

Key to the City 10/30/2018

When Ariana Bohling—who lives in Brooklyn but spends almost half her year in Peru producing her line of shoes and fuzzy alpaca slippers—gets a chance to see somewhere totally new, she jumps at it. Right now, she’s glowing from an adventure-packed trip to Tulum to reset before the crazy holiday season. “I’m happiest at the beach and speak Spanish fluently, so I figured I could get around easily,” she says. “I actually decided to do this trip alone for five days, which was a first. It was incredibly rewarding to travel solo!” Here are the highlights if you want to follow in her footsteps.

KEEP IT LIGHT

“It’s so humid there, so I filled my suitcase with airy clothing, my favorite swimsuits from Peru, and sunscreen. I’m a minimal packer. I’m constantly schlepping suitcases of shoes and slippers to trade shows, so I value the idea of traveling very light when possible.”

DIVE IN

“I went snorkeling in a couple cenotes, which are these sinkholes all over the Yucatán peninsula. I hadn’t snorkeled in 18 years and forgot how much I love it! The first cenote, Casa Cenote, was part of a beautiful mangrove forest. There is a crocodile who lives inside! The second cenote was called Dos Ojos. You have to swim through a maze of stalagmites to get into the center of the cave, and there are tons of bats and gorgeous fish inside. It was such a unique experience.”

GET RUINED

“I loved visiting the Mayan ruins. There are tall pyramids, along with huge sculptures of gods and significant objects. It’s all in the Maya jungle, so I was exposed to some of the world’s coolest trees and plants. The ruins of Tulum have a beautiful view of the water, and you can go for a dip at the beach while visiting.”

FIND YOUR FLOW

“I took a few great classes at a studio called Yoga Dicha. My favorite was the aligned flow class.”

COME HUNGRY

“There were so many standout restaurants. Arca was fantastic (the drinks!), and the bartender gave me a solid tip on a beach club called Caleta Tankah to visit the following day. La Barracuda has the most delish ceviche, and El Vegetariano had the best falafels.”

GO HOME WITH SOUVENIRS

“I couldn’t resist visiting most of the amazing boutiques, like La Tienda. I scored a pretty white cotton shirt dress that has a bunch of buttons up the front and a mandarin collar. I also bought a bunch of hand-dyed pom-pom bag charms made in Chiapas for our upcoming pop-up shop.”
