The Abstract Paintings That Get This Ceramic Artist’s Ideas Flowing

Stuff We Love 11/07/2018

Hilma af Klint makes this designer's world go 'round

Brooke Winfrey wouldn’t describe herself as a painter, per se, but a quick glance at the Jackson Pollock-esque pottery she turns out for her line BTW Ceramics is pretty solid proof that she’s got a professional interest in better brushstrokes. Here, the five abstract paintings she turns to in times of creative brainstorming.

JOAN MIRO, DOG BARKING AT THE MOON

“The colors and the shapes are so funky and quirky. I feel like he just covers the whole painting, and there’s so much going on. I tend to be more minimal in how I approach things, generally, and looking at his stuff makes me feel like it’s okay for go a little wacky every once and while but still make it work.”

CY TWOMBLY, UNTITLED PAINTING

“He doesn’t name a lot of his pieces, so, of course, the ones that I like don’t have titles. The movement that he captures—like with the dripping paint and the scribbles—really draws me in. You can’t look at it without actually seeing his hand in motion, which I think is pretty cool.”

HELEN FRANKENTHALER, ABSTRACT CLIMATES

“I really like how nothing in hers is literal. It’s more color blotches, so you can see in it whatever you want to see. This is so abstract that you get to create a little world.”

KLAUS KANDINSKY, STARS

“I love this trippy interpretation of the cosmos and infinity with really simple repeating shapes. He does a mix where some things can be identified as specific objects or places, but then he’ll do something with really clean lines at the same time—so you’ll look at it and see how it’s a crazy interpretation of the cosmos, just simplified, which is really rad.”

HILMA AF KLINT, DE TIO STÖRSA SERIES

“I'm fascinated by her focus on bringing the unseen and ethereal to the tangible and playful. She also has some sharper lines, but I think I read that she got her inspiration from the afterlife. You can kind of see that in her work. She’s trying to connect with the unseen in her pieces, so you have to use your imagination when looking at her work.”
