How One Designer Runs Two Businesses From Home

Stuff We Love 02/14/2019

Paige Cheyne describes her jewelry line, which she runs out of her L.A. home, as “pretty much a one-woman show” (though she does have an adorable cat and pup as co-workers). But in 2018 she took on whole new challenge—and a work wife—when launching the online vintage and independent design shop Weird Sisters with her close friend Jillian Maddocks of 323 Clothing. The two knew each other from trade shows and were looking for another outlet to highlight their fellow creative friends. Here’s how Paige balances WFH—and occasionally work from Jillian’s house—without getting overwhelmed.

GO AGAINST THE FLOW

“In order to better manage my time between the two businesses, I’ve decided not to work within the typical fashion seasons for my jewelry line, so I focus on creating timeless pieces as often as I want and need. I’m allowing myself that flexibility, as opposed to saying spring/summer has to be done by this time or it’s too late.”

HAVE A REAL ROUTINE—EVEN IF IT’S UNCONVENTIONAL

“I love working from home — my studio is in my living room. I roll out of bed, make coffee, stay in my sweatpants, and just start working. I have a really incredible Carhartt jumpsuit that I throw on over my clothes to keep them free of polishing compound and metal scrap bits. It makes me happy because it’s just so cute. Then I’ll take a break, make breakfast, and walk my dog, Charlie. He’s the one thing that gets me out of the house. Sometimes I’ll take a shower—but, honestly, sometimes I get in the zone, and that doesn’t happen until 2 p.m.”

CURB CABIN FEVER WITH PODCASTS

“I listen to a lot of podcasts. I like them more than music or the news because in a weird way you almost feel like you’re interacting with someone. I have been loving Guys We Fucked lately. Hidden Brain is also great. The episode I listened to last night was about different kinds of laughter and how people can tell whether it comes from a friend or an acquaintance and all the signals laughter elicits within a single second. I studied cognitive science in undergrad, so this stuff still fascinates me.”

CHOOSE A WORK WIFE WISELY

“It’s been amazing working with Jillian. We get along so well, and it doesn't even feel like a job a lot of the time. It’s nice to have somebody to bounce ideas off of, and most of the time we’re thinking the same thing. And I can work out of somebody else’s house for a change! We meet a couple of times a week. There’s always work to be done, whether it’s reaching out to new brands, shooting products, editing photos, working on the website, or brainstorming pop-ups. We also spend more time emailing than either of us ever could have imagined, so it’s nice to at least do that side-by-side.”

USE WHAT YOU KNOW

“It’s been interesting for both Jillian and I to be on the other side of the retail relationship, doing marketing for other designers and being responsible for their money and merchandise. I can apply a lot of the business skills I learned when I started my jewelry line, like managing paperwork and keeping track of finances, to Weird Sisters. But I’m doing a lot more photography and editing now—and I interact with more people every day—so it’s still stretching my skills.”

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE WHO GET IT

“One of the biggest challenges has been making enough time for my own brand and creative process because I was so excited about this new thing that it’s all I wanted to work on. I had to make time for my own separate ideas. Most of my friends are creatives, and my boyfriend is, too. He runs a gallery and is an artist himself, so it’s similar to what I do—selling other people’s work while making time for your own. It’s nice when you surround yourself with those sorts of people, and they understand how much self-discipline and time that takes.”
