The Greatest Hits of Brooklyn’s Greenpoint Neighborhood

Key to the City BY courtney conway 04/09/2019

Carla Venticinque-Osborn has mastered the whole short-commute thing—the textile designer behind the line Po-em lives in Brooklyn’s coolness-packed, northernmost neighborhood. “I love New York and especially the village of Greenpoint. I live close to the water, and my entire life routine—work, kid's school, shopping—takes place within that small area,” she explains. Below, Carla shares her neighborhood’s best flower shop, french fries, and, um, cat.

LITTLENECK OUTPOST

“I love their avocado toast. Anytime I eat this on a street bench, someone asks me where I got it. It's expensive and a splurge, but it’s so worth it if you’re in the mood for it.”

ALAMEDA

“They put cheese and scallions on their french fries, and they come out straight from the oven. They don't do takeout, so you'll be forced to sit at a beautiful bar while you eat them.”

ADAM DELICATESSEN

“Adam Delicatessen on Nassau Avenue has great nutty breakfast buns that the lady will dress up as you wish—I usually just get a buttered roll, and she makes my husband’s with mustard and some meat—and one usually comes to about $3. They'll make anything you want! It’s also a great stop for sausages, baked goods, imported Polish goods, and my favorite Polish yogurt. I've been coming here for years as it was close to my son's daycare and now school.”

POLKA DOT CAFÉ

“Go in there and have them warm you up a plate of perogies! Love the unique, homestyle setup they have going on.”

PETER PAN DONUTS

“We go here once a week with my son and my mom. Grab a seat at the counter and order your donut! My personal favorite is the glazed plain with a cup of tea.”

Do Things

TRANSMITTER PARK

“I love to sit under the weeping willow in Transmitter Park. This tree catches the wind and makes a soothing sound. Combined with the riverfront location and epic views, it's hands-down my favorite bench in Greenpoint. I follow it up with a walk out onto the pier.”

ANTIDOTE APOTHECARY

“I love shops where I feel transported and can really just take my time and explore lots of natural and thoughtful options. The owner Liz is extra special, and I love her in-house products, from medicinal tea blends to curated plants.”

HOMECOMING

“Every week or so, I make myself a bouquet. It's an investment in myself! I am very into self-care and taking time, and I have come to look forward to the few minutes of floral arranging from their gorgeous selections. It's also where I found my favorite perfume, 1509! They sell a small, curated selection of home goods, ceramics, plants, baked goods, magazines, etc. It's a small shop but one full of little (if a little pricey) treasures.”

PIP-SQUEAK CHAPEAU

“I tend to focus on Franklin Street because it's my commute route for all things. I adore Pip-Squeak Chapeau and always feel inspired after a visit there. They carry luxurious linen clothing and graceful cuts.”

PAS MAL

“Next door to Pip Squeak is Pas Mal, which is where you can find Po-em in Greenpoint. I get my yearly sun hat from here—a gift from my family to me for Mother's Day.”

THE COOLEST CAT AND DOG IN GREENPOINT

“Tux (I named him that!) is a petite tuxedo cat I have been watching for years. He's sassy, smart and cool. Greenpoint has quite the feral cat population. A registered colony always seems to be lounging about in the lot adjacent to the Community Garden on Franklin. We walk by this dog every day at a doggy daycare on Meserole. My son loves him, and he barely pays us any mind—which just makes him that much cooler.”
