How This Designer Closed Up Shop and Took a 13-Month Trip Around the World

Get Outta Town 05/09/2019

Stefani Stoyanof, the jetsetting jeweler behind Swim to the Moon, doesn’t do anything small. She and her husband Marco were splitting their time between Greece and Texas when they decided to take an epic trip—which turned into a 13-month journey around the globe—before the pair settled full-time in Athens. “It’s not an easy decision to leave your comforts behind to enter a world of uncertainty, but we found ourselves needing a break from the day-to-day monotony,” explains Stefani, who ended the trek with plenty of new ideas for her line and a fresh appreciation for artisans everywhere. Here’s how she made it happen.

PLOT AND SAVE

“We started planning our sabbatical by each writing a list of the top ten countries we wanted to visit and, from there, formed a clockwise route around the world. We had a specific budget and saved for two years to make it happen. We sold every material thing we owned, aside from sentimental items and books, so that our life fit into 11 small boxes that we stored in my mother’s garage (thanks, Mom!).”

GET COMFORTABLE WITH ALL FORMS OF TRANSPORT AND LODGING

“We started out in America, road-tripping from coast to coast for a month and camping in the Redwood Forest. Next, we said goodbye to our Volkswagen and hopped a plane to Spain, a boat to Morocco, a flight to Austria, a bus to Slovakia and then to Hungary, with a pit stop in Greece to recharge. Then we traveled through India and Asia, stopping in Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Burma. Next, we camped throughout New Zealand and then crossed the Pacific, landing in Chile. We bused through Bolivia, hiked through Peru, and finished our adventure with family in Paraguay.”

READY A SAFETY NET

“Make sure you get global health insurance that will cover you—after an Indonesian surfing injury, I speak from experience! This will help with what I think is most important: Don’t be afraid. Go out and immerse yourself in these new cultures.”

GO AHEAD AND PLAY FAVORITES

“Everywhere is so different, but India was a complete jolt to my senses. The colors, patterns, smells, and sounds all shook me awake. I also fell in love with Vietnam’s magical landscapes and spices, and I’ll never forget the friendly faces I met in Burma. Whether I was strolling through a farmers’ market or riding my bicycle around the pagodas, I made a new friend every day there. The beautiful thing about being on an open-ended trip was getting to stay longer in the places we loved the most. ”

OPEN YOUR MIND

“I spent a lot of time with different artisans around the world and left with a greater appreciation for what ‘handcrafted’ really means. There is no need for a big studio or the latest gear. Each artisan I met could tell me exactly where they sourced the material used for each piece. I witnessed raw talent at every turn. Swim to the Moon has always been a handmade, sustainable company, but traveling inspired me to find out where each and every material was sourced. I stopped using 3D printing and fell back on the ancient techniques our ancestors used to make jewelry. I tried to create a collection with emotional and historical relevance, with hopes that each piece accompanies the wearer throughout their adventures.”
