How to Make Frame-Worthy Collages Like a Multimedia Artist

Hone Your Craft 05/14/2019

Sara Ritz has never met an art project that she hasn’t wanted to tackle—and though running Freundeskreis Goods involves plenty of hands-on ceramics work, she de-compresses by constructing something else: vibrant collage creations. As she says, “Making them is quite therapeutic for me because I unplug my brain and just cut, paste, and see what happens.” Despite her low-key approach, the results are extremely profesh. Here’s how to follow her lead.

DON’T BE TOO COOL TO CRAFT

“I’m programmed to make stuff, and my brain and hands become unhappy and restless when they’re not making something out of nothing. I love making art, but I also unapologetically love to craft. It gets such a bad rap, but I find it really important!”

LOOK TO LEAVES

“These paper collages grew out of a project that I was making for my wedding. I had the overly ambitious idea to hand-cut paper leaves that would become lush table runners. Afterward, I had tons of paper scraps and turned them into collages of abstract imagery.”

SUPPLY YOURSELF

“Anyone can make these! To get started, you’ll need colorful paper, scissors, a glue stick, and a thick piece of paper to create your collage on. I recommend a heavier cardstock paper, and I shop for mine at Joann Fabrics because the selection is great. Plus, the people watching at Joann cannot be beat.”

DON’T OVERTHINK IT

“I consider my collages sketches because I never begin with a plan other than the color palette that I want to use. The process is organic and generally informed by an interesting scrap shape I’ve kept around. I usually cut out many shapes and arrange them on the page before I glue them into place. The most important thing is not to think about it too much! With ceramics, more often than not, I'm working on projects that call for lots of precision. Collages are all one of a kind, so the pressure for complete accuracy doesn’t exist.”
