Portland, Maine, Coffee Spots and Bakeries to Make Your Morning

Key to the City BY katie nave freeman 06/12/2019

Even though the ceramicist Aimee McLaughlin is a newbie to Portland, Maine, she knows where her settling-in priorities lie: finding all the greatest spots for coffee and pastries. Here are a few of her winning recommendations for the brightest of mornings.

SPECKLED AX

“This coffee shop makes delicious wood-roasted coffee. I always make time for a pourover because the coffee is such an unusual treat. Their beans are also the best gift for coffee lovers.”

LITTLE WOODFORDS

“The sweetest coffee shop in town. This place makes you feel like everyone's your neighbor and everything's gonna be alright. They always have seemingly simple, yet gourmet, pastries. If you're feeling stressed, you can even ask for a little CBD oil with your cup of joe.”

COFFEE BY DESIGN

“Superior coffee for every day. I generally go for the light roast (more caffeine!) and pair it with a cinnamon-and-sugar donut from Holy Donut.”

HOLY DONUT

“They make their donuts from fresh Maine potatoes, and they are perfectly crunchy on the outside yet delightfully doughy on the inside. Very grateful this place is right around the corner from my studio.”

HIFI DONUTS

“One of my studiomates won a monthly business-card drawing from Hifi Donuts and brought her winnings—a dozen free donuts—to the studio to share. By chance, I chose a lemon poppyseed donut, and it was unbelievably delicious. The poppyseed dough was hollowed out on one side creating a sort of moat and filled with sweet and tart lemon curd then generously dusted with powdered sugar. Now I drop my business card in the jar and say a little donut prayer every time I'm there.”

TANDEM BAKERY

“Tandem Bakery makes the best egg-and-cheese biscuit I've ever had, and I'm from the South. And if egg and cheese isn't your thing, there's an equally delicious butter-and-jam biscuit, plus cinnamon rolls, cookies, and pies. Someone is always baking pies.”

BIG SKY BAKERY

“Flour and warmth fills the air here. They make at least a dozen varieties of bread that will transform any sandwich. The German rye and hearty oat are my favorites. Big Sky also makes sourdough bagels that have almost won me over from New York bagels, something I never could have imagined possible. And last but not least, there's a giant sample board at the counter full of daily specials.”
