How to Spend a Perfect, Restorative Day in Long Beach, California

Key to the City 07/11/2019

“Long Beach is probably the most underrated, best-kept secret of Southern California,” insists Analisa, a SoCal girl through and through. “And no, I’m not just saying that because I grew up here!” It’s also the home base for her line of ethically made leather bags, Marloe, and the subject of her city guide, which delivers the sort chill you get from a day spent hunting for hidden murals and taste-testing tiki drinks.

START WITH COFFEE

“A solid one-stop shop for pastries and java is The Merchant. One of the co-owners studied pastry-making in France, and their baked goods take me back to mornings in Paris.”

UNCOVER SOME ART

“There is art everywhere! I love that LB is full of murals, street art, and outdoor sculptures. There are so many hidden murals all over Long Beach, and I still haven’t discovered them all. Plus, it’s home to some amazing art and cultural museums, like the Long Beach Museum of Art.”

DON’T BE AFRAID TO GET TOURISTY

“First, you gotta hit the tourist staples. The Queen Mary is a must-see. If you have kids, visit the Aquarium of the Pacific. Peruse the Long Beach Antique Market and stop by a farmers’ market. For food and beer, head to The Hangar or the outdoor eatery SteelCraft in Bixby Knolls.”

STOP FOR SNACKS

“Long Beach has endless dining options, and the best part is you don't have to drive very far to taste them all. I love Vino e Cucina, a small family-owned and -operated Italian restaurant that makes everything in house from scratch.”

SHOP LIKE A LOCAL

“I’ve experienced tremendous love and support for my business in Long Beach. I partner with local shops to carry Marloe products or participate in pop-ups. It's an unwritten rule that we all support the small local businesses. We get excited when a new shop opens, and we all want to spread the word and be the first to visit! For cute outfits, I pop into And Then in Bixby Knolls or Anneise in Downtown Long Beach. For great-condition vintage, I shop at Ay Que Vintage in the Arts District. I love having plants in my studio, so I frequent Peacock and Company for greenery.”

CLOSE IT OUT WITH COCKTAILS

Padre in Downtown Long Beach has the best cocktails IMO. If you’re in the mood for something tropical, head over to The Bamboo Club for tiki drinks. You’ll feel like you’ve traveled to Hawaii circa 1950.”
