Science-Based Advice for Banishing Split Ends and Soothing Damaged Strands

Thing of Beauty BY courtney conway 07/19/2019

There’s a pretty good chance you’re currently battling at least some frayed or broken hair as you read this. Historically, those were problems that could be temporarily covered up, but long-term solutions (other than chopping it all off!) were elusive. Hey, not anymore! We got all the hairy details on preventing and dealing with split ends and less-than-ideal texture from Dustin Smith, a hair stylist and educator over at Virtue Labs, a line that relies on heavy-duty research into keratin protein that naturally occurs in our bodies.

DITCH THE HEAT

“I find that people with really frizzy or unruly hair spend a lot of time blow-drying their hair and then straightening it as well, which is only going to make it worse. First, embrace your natural texture if you can. Get your hair to its healthiest version, and you might not want to use those styling tools anymore. Products that have keratin in them have a really restorative quality. Virtue uses a special version of human keratin that fills in damage and can actually resurface the hair. Having healthy hair will also save you time in the long run since it’ll put your flat iron on retirement.”

USE SMOOTHING PRODUCTS—REGARDLESS OF TEXTURE

“I recommend hydrating, rich products for everyone. Sometimes people with curly hair don’t think that they can use products that promote smooth hair since they don’t think of their curls as being traditionally smooth. But, you still want your curls to be shiny and not frizzy. My curly-hair clients really like using the Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner because it creates really luxurious curls.”

ZAP FRIZZ WHEN WET

“Styling products and treatments used to be different products. Now, any styling product you use should also be something that improves your hair health. If your hair is frizzy, apply a leave-in conditioner or cream while it’s still wet. I like to use the Polish Un-Frizz Cream. I rub it in my hands and distribute it throughout damp hair, and then I take a wide-tooth comb and brush it all the way through. Just a bit goes a long way. If you do want to do a blowout, this will protect the hair and seal up the cuticle for a sun-reflective finish. Blow-drying without product is the first cause of split ends. You need something to act as a barrier that’s going to burn before your hair starts to burn if things get too hot.”

DON’T GIVE UP ON YOUR ENDS

“For the longest time, once you had split ends, that was kind of it—you had to cut them. Virtue products are the first that actually help bind the hair back together with our special human keratin, Alpha Keratin 60ku. Quitting heat-styling and products with harsh ingredients like parabens will help halt the broken ends.”

INVEST IN MAINTENANCE

“People often opt to spend a lot of money on damaging treatments at a salon, like dyeing, heat-styling, and chemical treatments, but then they tend to skip on investing in products that will make their hair healthier in the long run. I think it’s more important to use your resources on the daily and weekly products with good ingredients, and over a few weeks or months, you’ll start to see a big difference that will last.”
